BitGive, the first nonprofit to combine Bitcoin technology with 501(c)(3) status, unveiled GiveTrack in beta form Tuesday night at Money2020 in Las Vegas. The platform tracks charitable donations from the moment donors give to when the money reaches its intended recipients.

Connie Gallippi, BitGive's founder and executive director, demonstrated GiveTrack in public for the first time. She said the system harnesses blockchain technology's core strengths, transparency and security, to reshape how people give to charity. "By releasing GiveTrack, BitGive is utilizing the unique benefits these [blockchain] technologies have to offer – like unparalleled transparency and security – to enhance and revolutionize the donation process," Gallippi explained.

The platform gives all donors, from individuals to major contributors, something most charities don't offer: complete visibility into their contributions. Donors see where their money goes, when it arrives, and what it accomplishes. Many charities funnel donations toward administration and fundraising, leaving little for actual work in the field. GiveTrack makes those spending patterns visible to the people who funded them.

Gallippi views this as a transformation in how philanthropy works. Understanding how charities spend money builds trust between donors and organizations, she said. "Furthermore, individuals can build more trust with charitable organizations by knowing how their funds are used to drive impact on the ground. In doing so, we hope to increase charitable giving to create a global movement towards philanthropy," she said.

For its initial rollout, BitGive selected two organizations to test GiveTrack: The Water Project and Medic Mobile, both projects aimed at bettering human health across the world.
