BitMEX, a leading derivatives exchange for bitcoin trading, announced the appointment of Angelina Kwan to the role of chief operating officer. The veteran regulator will be stationed in Hong Kong and tasked with expanding the platform's operations. Kwan brings considerable regulatory pedigree to the position, having most recently served as managing director and chief compliance officer at HKEX, which operates Hong Kong's stock exchange, futures exchange, and associated clearing infrastructure.
In remarks to the South China Morning Post, Kwan emphasized her commitment to bridging the gap between the emerging cryptocurrency sector and financial authorities globally. "I'm eager to leverage my background to foster productive conversations with regulators worldwide about shaping cryptocurrency rules that safeguard participants while fostering industry growth," she stated.
A certified public accountant by credential, Kwan brings more than two decades of experience across financial leadership positions throughout Asia-Pacific and North America. Her career includes eight years at Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission and roles at major international financial institutions focused on securities trading and portfolio management.
Describing her decision to join BitMEX, Kwan noted her professional satisfaction comes from revitalizing struggling firms, building new enterprises, and serving in governance roles. "I've always gravitated toward organizations positioned at the edge of transformative change—and BitMEX represents exactly that kind of opportunity," she explained.
Established in 2014, BitMEX operates among the world's most sophisticated platforms for bitcoin derivatives, serving institutional hedgers, mining operations, and professional market participants. The exchange, maintained by HDR Global Trading Limited, a Seychelles-based entity, recently achieved a remarkable feat by facilitating over 1 million bitcoin in daily volume.
"Bringing Angelina into our leadership team marks a watershed moment both for BitMEX and for digital assets more broadly," explained Arthur Hayes, BitMEX's founder and chief executive. Hayes characterized Kwan's appointment as evidence that institutional capital is recognizing cryptocurrency's emergence as a consequential financial sector. "Her proficiency spanning regulation, exchange operations, and stakeholder engagement will be essential as we accelerate institutional participation and expand cryptocurrency's footprint in mainstream finance," he added.
