CharityStars, the online fundraising platform where users bid on exclusive experiences and merchandise, now accepts bitcoin and ethereum donations. Cryptocurrency donors can participate on the platform for the first time, with proceeds flowing directly to partnering charitable organizations.

The first crypto-backed auction generated a $36,000 bitcoin bid for the opportunity to meet footballer Cristiano Ronaldo. The proceeds benefit the Forever Dream Foundation, an organization dedicated to creating sports and entertainment experiences for disadvantaged children and families, transforming their dreams into reality.

The decision to accept digital currencies represents a major shift for CharityStars as the platform integrates with the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. Francesco Nazari Fusetti, who co-founded CharityStars in 2013 alongside Manuella Ravalli and Domenico Gravagno, described the move as a natural one for the company's expansion. "This opportunity will change the way we donate funds to our partnering charities and aid us in reaching a new audience of potential donors in the crypto world," Fusetti told MiningPool. "We believe that allowing people to easily donate with crypto is a significant step forward in the nonprofit sector."

Headquartered in Los Angeles with satellite offices in London and Milan, CharityStars operates within a global network of partners. The platform maintains established relationships with international charities and prominent figures from the entertainment world. Since its founding, CharityStars has raised more than $9 million in support of 450 different charitable organizations, including Unicef, Save the Children, and the WWF. The platform features exclusive auction opportunities: meetings with designer Vivienne Westwood during London Fashion Week, watching an FC Barcelona home game with Leo Messi, or hosting a business lunch with restaurateur Giuseppe Cipriani.

By accepting digital currency donations, CharityStars adds a new layer of transparency to charitable fundraising. The integration of blockchain technology enables the use of blockchains for tracking transactions and smart contracts for ensuring donations reach their intended recipients. Fusetti explained the potential of this approach: "It is quite clear that by using blockchains to track transactions, cryptocurrencies to transfer funds, and smart contracts to ensure donations are spent correctly, blockchain has the potential to bring widespread transparency to the sector."

Donors have embraced the crypto integration since the announcement, placing bids in both bitcoin and ethereum across multiple auctions on the platform. Fusetti emphasized the platform's appeal: "CharityStars represents an incredible marketplace where donors spend their money, be it either through cryptocurrency or fiat currency, acquiring unique products or unforgettable experiences that you won't find anywhere else."

Bidders can use either traditional currency or digital coins when participating in auctions. The company has not ruled out future auctions denominated in cryptocurrency alone, though such offerings are not planned at this time.
