But testing Bitcoin features before going live remained cumbersome. A developer or merchant had no straightforward way to experiment without putting real money at risk. That barrier kept many from exploring Bitcoin tools at all. Coinbase announced a fix today: a sandbox environment where developers and merchants can test Bitcoin functionality without real bitcoin.

The Coinbase Sandbox operates on testnet3, an alternate blockchain designed specifically for testing Bitcoin features. Unlike the main Bitcoin network, it costs nothing to operate. Developers need no active Coinbase account, nor do they need to own any Bitcoin to begin testing.

The sandbox recreates the live system exactly. Every interface, tool, and workflow matches the production environment. When a developer works in the sandbox, they encounter the same setup they'll face on the live Coinbase API. Developers gain realistic expectations about what production work demands from this experience.

New users receive 0.1 testnet Bitcoin upon signing up. They can get more testnet Bitcoin from faucets or by trading with other sandbox users. Coinbase set no cap on how much testnet Bitcoin an individual can hold.

Coinbase disabled some features in the sandbox. Verifications, bank account synchronization, and referral programs don't work in the testing environment. Coinbase said these features aren't necessary for testing purposes.

Developers can access the sandbox at sandbox.coinbase.com by setting up a free account.

With this sandbox, Coinbase seeks to attract developers. BitPay leads the merchant payment tools market. A sandbox that reduces friction in development could steer developers toward Coinbase. The company needs competitive approaches to challenge BitPay, and easier development tools may help.

Developers who face fewer testing obstacles build new tools faster. Those tools drive Bitcoin awareness and adoption forward.
