Eight major DeFi projects have joined the Open DeFi Alliance's western expansion. Balancer, Aave, BlockScience, SuperRare, Ocean Ventures, DyDx, Quantstamp, and Outlier Ventures all signed on to the consortium, which launched in Shanghai last month with backing from a local science and technology institution.

The move marks the alliance's first major push beyond Asia. Four of the new members rank among the 20 largest DeFi protocols by total value locked. The original roster included Antelope Holdings, Conflux Network, Blockpower Capital, MoonSwap, dForce, DeBank, Sequoia Capital, and MCDEX.

The consortium coordinates on liquidity strategies, risk management, and protocol innovation across its member projects. The alliance was founded to bring together the sector's leading voices and create a universal cooperative structure.

Aave's CEO, Stani Kulechov, expressed strong support for the initiative. He praised the alliance for championing DeFi's borderless mission and said he welcomed the chance to collaborate with other major projects on the group's objectives. David Gogel from DyDx highlighted China's importance. "China plays an important role in the global DeFi ecosystem and remains a key market for our long-term success…China has a massive user base that will bring liquidity, volume, and more innovation to global markets for greater growth potential," he said.

Three other major DeFi alliances formed in 2020. Ren and Polychain Capital started the Ren Alliance in March. Cumberland DRW and TD Ameritrade launched the Chicago DeFi Alliance in April. The Huobi exchange announced a DeFi organization in August to connect East and West markets.
