ConsenSys released a mobile version of MetaMask, its Ethereum wallet, bringing the crypto tool to Android and iOS after years of operating as a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox. Mobile users had no way to run MetaMask before this, leaving them stuck with desktop or forced to find workarounds to interact with crypto and decentralized finance.

Four million users had installed MetaMask by the time of this announcement. The mobile app preserves core wallet functionality—managing digital assets and exploring dApps—while introducing new capabilities unavailable on desktop. Most importantly, you can purchase ether from the app using Apple Pay, debit cards, and other payment options that vary by region. This removes friction that DeFi users faced when trying to onboard into the ecosystem.

Setting up the mobile version takes minimal effort. Users can generate a QR code from their desktop MetaMask, scan it with their phone, and import their entire transaction history to the device in one step. Beyond asset management, the app enables you to create passwords and keys for dApps, access a secure key vault, sign messages, store NFTs, and play blockchain-powered games.

ConsenSys did not bring over every feature from the desktop version to mobile. Missing is support for Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets, a limitation that keeps security-focused users dependent on desktop for accounts protected by hardware devices.

Joseph Lubin, ConsenSys founder and Ethereum co-founder, characterized the launch as follows: "What smartphones have done for Web2, we believe MetaMask Mobile will do for Web3." ConsenSys also announced it had acquired Quorum.
