eToro, an investment platform focused on multiple asset classes, has signed sponsorship deals with seven Premier League teams after settling the contracts in bitcoin. The club partnerships include Tottenham Hotspur F.C., Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., Cardiff City F.C., Crystal Palace F.C., Leicester City F.C., Newcastle United F.C., and Southampton F.C.
For the first time, a company has paid for Premier League sponsorships using cryptocurrency. Iqbal V. Gandham, UK Managing Director at eToro, said the company wanted to "make history by being the first company ever to pay for a Premier League partnership in bitcoin." Through the partnerships, eToro gains exposure to millions of sports fans while promoting its platform, which lets customers purchase crypto alongside stocks, ETFs and commodities.
eToro sees these sponsorships as a vehicle for introducing blockchain technology to new audiences. The company believes crypto and its underlying blockchain technology can transform football and sports. In the future, this could include addressing ticket touting, improving transparency, and guaranteeing merchandise authenticity. Gandham emphasized the importance of education: "Education will be key so that industries can understand the potential and so getting global exposure through these Premier League clubs represents a great opportunity to raise awareness."
He added that blockchain itself offers real value: "Blockchain brings transparency, which means it can improve the experience for everyone who loves the 'beautiful game'."
The partnerships grant eToro prominent marketing placement during matches through LED boards, player involvement, tickets and digital rights.
The seven clubs view the partnership as an opportunity to explore blockchain's applications in sports. Fran Jones, Head of Partnerships at Tottenham Hotspur F.C., stated: "At Tottenham Hotspur, we are committed to technology and innovation and as such we're excited to welcome eToro as a partner in a category that is developing at a rapid rate."
Paul Barber, Chief Executive at Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., said: "At Brighton, we pride ourselves in being at the forefront of bringing new technologies and new ideas to football. We're excited to welcome eToro as a partner that can help us better understand the true potential offered by blockchain."
Barry Webber, Commercial Director at Crystal Palace F.C., explained: "Blockchain technology is bringing exciting new opportunities to all areas of business sectors and we are delighted to welcome eToro as a partner so we can explore its potential in football."
Jonathan Gregory, Commercial Director at Leicester City F.C., noted: "We are pleased to welcome eToro to the Club as an Official Partner, it is exciting to be working with such an innovative industry leader. Much like Leicester City, eToro is an ambitious brand with a significant global reach and we look forward to working together throughout the season."
David Thomas, Commercial Director at Southampton F.C., added: "We are extremely pleased to be welcoming eToro as a club partner. We look forward to working with them and learning more about the potential that cryptocurrency and blockchain technology can have in football."
eToro operates as a multi-asset investment platform with over ten million registered users across the globe. The platform empowers investors to build diversified portfolios and follow the strategies of successful traders. Users can trade and hold cryptoassets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, stocks, ETFs, commodities and thousands of additional financial instruments, all within a single account.
The company positions itself as a bridge connecting traditional financial markets with the emerging digital asset world. Executives believe all assets will eventually be tokenised on blockchains, and that cryptocurrency represents the first stage of this broader transformation. These Premier League partnerships provide eToro with a high-profile platform to educate global sports audiences about these technological shifts.
