On March 22nd, Toronto-based Paycase Financial and TMX Group announced a partnership to launch Shorcan Digital Currency Network, marking the first time a major exchange has operated a cryptocurrency brokerage desk.
Shorcan will launch in the second quarter of 2018 and will trade Bitcoin and Ether, the two cryptocurrencies with the largest market capitalizations. BMO Financial Group will provide banking infrastructure for the platform.
"We are thrilled about this partnership between Paycase Financial and the TMX. As the first ever public crypto brokerage desk by an exchange, this deal represents the true institutionalization of cryptocurrencies as an asset class," said Joseph Weinberg, Paycase's chief executive and special adviser to the OECD Think Tank.
The partnership reflects how Canadian startups and major financial institutions have begun collaborating to build new asset classes and establish Canada as an attractive hub for financial innovation. Shorcan will target the appetite Canadian investors have shown for cryptocurrency exposure, offering them institutional access to trading. The venture speaks to a broader shift in how markets view cryptocurrencies, moving beyond pure speculation toward serious evaluation of their role in investment strategies.
TMX Group operates Canada's equities, fixed income, derivatives, and energy markets. The company runs the Toronto Stock Exchange along with the Montréal Exchange, NGX, and TSX Alpha Exchange. TMX also oversees CDS, Canada's depository, clearing, and settlement infrastructure. Based in Toronto, the company serves clients across North America and maintains key international operations.
Paycase built a mobile platform for moving money across borders with security and speed. The company targets markets where infrastructure gaps restrict financial access, focusing on transfers between Canada and the Philippines. Paycase operates in a private, invitation-only beta.
