Timeframe to implement first commercial blockchain solution, Daring to be first: How auto pioneers are taking the plunge into blockchain, IBM Institute for Business Value The IBM Institute for Business Value, in collaboration with Oxford Economics, surveyed 1,314 automotive executives, encompassing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers, across 10 functional areas and 10 countries encompassing China, Germany, India and the US, and found that Auto Pioneers, which represented 15% of all the automotive organizations surveyed, have been exploring blockchain opportunities ahead of competitors, with 56% of them stating they were ready for blockchain and 95% planning to make moderate to significant investment in blockchain solutions over the next three years. Organizations like the Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) are exploring the use of blockchain to aid make mobility safer, more affordable and more widely accepted. The consortium was launched in May 2018 by leading automakers encompassing Renault, Ford, GM, and BMW, and represents more than 80% of global auto manufacturing by volume. Some of MOBI’s initial projects concentrate on secure mobility commerce, usage-based mobility pricing and payments, and vehicle identity, history and usage. In 2016, Indian multinational car manufacturer Mahindra Group began working with IBM to create a cloud-based, blockchain-enabled common platform for Mahindra Finance’s supplier to manufacturer transactions, allowing all parties to view transactions in real time, driving trust and transparency through the supply chain. Dutch trucking transportation and logistics services provider Koopman Logistics Group trialed a blockchain platform earlier this year that tracked shipments of finished vehicles in real time and automated administrative transactions. German multinational automotive corporation Daimler launched its own blockchain-based digital currency dubbed MobiCoin in March 2018 an initiative part of the company’s initiative to reward drivers for eco-friendly driving habits. “We are in the very early stages for blockchain in auto, but there lies huge potential,” Ben Stanley, Automotive Research for IBM’s Institute of Business Value, stated in a statement. “In 2019 we expect to see blockchain start to really take off, particularly with secure data sharing, car and ride share transactions and in-vehicle marketplaces.” The report underscores how blockchain can introduce operational efficiencies, improved transparency of information and facilitate transaction traceability. In particular, the report identifies finance, supply chain and mobility services as the areas that would benefit the most from blockchain. Auto executives expect blockchain to impact operational metrics in crucial functional areas, Daring to be first: How auto pioneers are taking the plunge into blockchain, IBM Institute for Business Value 55% of OEMs and 47% of suppliers surveyed by IBM believe that implementing blockchain will improve imperfect information in their business networks, whereas 52% of OEMs and 40% of suppliers noted that information risks can be improved. Finally, 43% of OEMs and 29% of suppliers noted that blockchain will improve the ability to access information needed for a particular transaction.
