My Ethereum Wallet (MEW), the open-source wallet generation interface, has rolled out a feature enabling users to build and host decentralized websites. Through "Host Your Own Site," individuals can launch on blockchain-based domains—.crypto and .eth extensions included—using the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) infrastructure.

The capability marks a fundamental expansion of wallet technology beyond transaction management. Users gain the ability to interact directly with blockchain protocols while maintaining complete control over their private keys. Domains function as on-chain assets, governed through Ethereum smart contracts that let creators dictate their site's content.

IPFS operates as a distributed peer-to-peer storage layer, spreading information across a network of interconnected computers rather than centralized servers. These domain registrations link to Ethereum's naming infrastructure, particularly Unstoppable Domains and ENS. Recently, Unstoppable Domains partnered with MEW to introduce dBlogs, a service for building and maintaining censorship-resistant web properties. Registration costs $40 annually with no recurring renewal fees.

"Everyone deserves the ability to put information online, conduct transactions, and connect with others without facing suppression," noted Brad Kam, Unstoppable Domains' chief executive. MEW's chief, Kosala Hemachandra, articulated the platform's mission: "Our 'Host Your Own Site' tool makes publishing on decentralized domains simple and accessible to anyone." He expanded: "Crypto wallets have transcended their role as payment vehicles." Hemachandra underscored that most crypto users don't fully appreciate the potential embedded in blockchain domains. This feature introduces people to blockchain's more sophisticated applications while serving those who prioritize unimpeded expression. "We believe in enabling free speech," Hemachandra stated.

Challenges remain, as the technology occupies an early development phase. Current limitations restrict sites to static content—dynamic platforms like WordPress prove incompatible. "WordPress requires a backend server to operate," Hemachandra explained. "In a decentralized ecosystem, no such servers exist, making it technically unfeasible to run WordPress there." Though solving this problem appears daunting, Hemachandra indicated that "nothing is impossible" moving forward.
