NeuCoin launched to reasonable skepticism. Altcoins promised the world and delivered vaporware. This one delivered.
Late last month, the digital currency integrated into Jango, the popular music streaming service that competes with Pandora. The platform boasts over 7 million monthly listeners. Daniel Kaufmann, NeuCoin's creator, previously ran Jango as CEO. That background gave him an entry point.
Jango's core feature sets it apart from Pandora and similar services. Rather than forcing ads on users, it plays tracks from emerging artists. Listeners vote on these tracks, shaping an artist's exposure. Now those same listeners can tip artists in NeuCoins.
The rollout is generous. Jango gave each user 25 NeuCoins upfront. Spend them, and you get another 25. At current prices, 25 NeuCoins equals about $0.06, or 0.000158 BTC.
This differs from ChangeTip and comparable bitcoin tipping platforms, which sit on top of existing social networks. NeuCoin sits in Jango itself, dominating the interface. Jango sent an email to users announcing the feature.
Artists had no clear path to handle their tips. They could trade tips for fiat or move them through bitcoin. Neither Jango nor NeuCoin specified the mechanics. Yet some artists appreciate the feature. "Received a #Neucoin tip for my #music being played internationally. Random encouragement is a nice feeling. #indie," Kyle Walz tweeted.
The altcoin sector is consolidating. Survivors will be the ones with genuine use cases. Kaufmann's former position at Jango combined with the NeuCoin team's marketing execution brought this deal together.
The integration extended beyond music. NeuCoin also appeared in Solitaire Racer, a Facebook game.
