The NFL Players Association has taken a minority stake in SportsCastr, a blockchain platform for live streaming and sports commentary. The union made the move through OneTeam Collective, its athlete-focused accelerator program, as part of a broader push into cryptocurrency-enabled fan engagement.

SportsCastr operates a live streaming service where anyone can broadcast games and deliver real-time commentary for professional and collegiate sports. The platform's FanChain token system lets users accumulate coins by participating, which they can spend on exclusive content from NFL players, purchase tickets and merchandise, or send virtual gifts to athletes. Players earn revenue from the content they create.

Before this, Kevin April says, fans searching for athlete-generated content had to "use generic social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram to find content from their favourite athletes." April, SportsCastr's CEO, describes the current landscape as "a very fragmented landscape" where player content remains scattered. His company plans to consolidate that content in one place built for sports audiences.

The technical advantage over existing platforms lies in speed. Facebook Live carries a 10-second delay. SportsCastr operates at sub-second latency, meaning viewers see live streams from athletes as they happen, without noticeable lag.

April sees the partnership as a gateway for introducing cryptocurrency to mainstream audiences. He told MiningPool: "Because there's nothing more global or mainstream than sports, there is an opportunity to introduce cryptocurrency to a massive audience that crosses every border and speaks every language." The union's involvement, he argues, gives crypto adoption credibility among fans who might otherwise never encounter blockchain technology.

Athlete-generated content spreads across various platforms, but it remains fragmented. Publications and blogs exist, but April contends these don't capture "authentic reactions." SportsCastr's one-to-one model closes that distance. "SportsCastr removes the barriers between the athlete and the fan," he says. "Isn't that every sports fan's dream?"

The first NFL players are scheduled to launch on the platform in the third quarter of 2018.
