A Swiss nonprofit called the Publiq Foundation announced the launch of a blockchain-based content platform designed to combat fake news and bias in reporting. The platform gives authors, journalists, bloggers and advertisers the ability to operate and govern their own publishing ecosystem without any centralized control. All revenue earned through the platform gets distributed to content creators who participate.
Readers rate content through a feedback system that shapes each author's reputation score. The higher the score, the larger the payout in PBQ tokens. This system rewards writers whose audiences demonstrate they find their work valuable and worth sharing.
Publiq CEO Alexandre Tabbakh described the vision: "By creating a content distribution platform, we're trying to tackle the tabloid journalism that is consumed daily. Propaganda and fake news are some of the main problems the media industry faces. We are creating an ecosystem of accredited authors with trusted reputations, and guarantee that only high quality content will be promoted over the platform. The merit-based distribution will result in a paradigm shift by unchaining the creative power of an individual to become a full participant of the economy of the future."
The company targets several longstanding problems that have plagued the media industry. Most publishing is now controlled by a few large corporations. Writers and reporters earn far less than the economic value their reporting generates. The reader experience gets sacrificed on the altar of advertising revenue and profit. Quality reporting gets buried under sensational content.
Publiq addresses all these chronic issues by leveraging blockchain infrastructure and network effects. Every article posted to the platform gets cryptographically sealed and distributed across a blockchain, preventing any unauthorized changes and censorship. The reputation system removes all need for traditional publishers or other intermediaries in the distribution process. Advertisers benefit from an AI-powered algorithm that targets advertisements based on what readers consume.
Publiq enters a crowded marketplace of startups tackling similar problems. Copenhagen-based Media Shifter built a news aggregator where community members validate stories through blockchain-based consensus, enabling readers to cut through the noise and bias in today's fragmented media landscape. Userfeeds is developing a ranking and reputation system for blockchain communities.
