Purse stands out among Bitcoin companies because it builds something people without crypto interest want. While most Bitcoin startups chase trading platforms or wallet software, Purse gave ordinary shoppers a reason to touch Bitcoin: they could buy things on Amazon at a discount. The company is now taking that momentum further and launching a marketplace where anyone can sell goods for cryptocurrency without needing approval from banks or payment processors.
Co-Founder and CEO Andrew Lee talked through the strategy in an interview. The marketplace operates on a simple principle. "We use Bitcoin to enable anyone to shop, earn bitcoins, or sell items without approval from banks or payment processors," Lee said. On Purse's platform, sellers skip the merchant account gauntlet. Bitcoin handles payments, and the platform accepts other cryptocurrencies through ShapeShift integration. Unlike competitors like OpenBazaar and BitMarkets that prioritize anonymity, Purse is betting on "ease-of-use and customer satisfaction instead of total anonymity," Lee explained.
Purse has built real expertise in escrow. The platform uses blockchain technology and multisignature addresses to hold funds during transactions. That operational advantage matters. "Purse is not only the largest consumer marketplace in the world for Bitcoin but also the most experienced blockchain escrow agent. We're leveraging our reputation system, network, and payments mechanism to expand the platform," Lee said.
The harder problem is eBay. That company has dominated online commerce for years and carries enormous network advantages. Purse can counter this in one way: by combining Amazon's existing catalog with Bitcoin discounts users already trust. The platform shows Amazon merchandise alongside items users post for sale. The interface mirrors standard e-commerce sites, and Purse released a demo video showing how straightforward the buying process is.
For mainstream adoption, Purse has another angle. People can hold dollars on Coinbase in some states and on Circle, which means they can access Amazon discounts without ever thinking about Bitcoin. Bitcoin advocates talk about the apps instead of the protocol. Average users want tools that work. Bitcoin runs underneath.
