Ripple has signed on four new universities to its research initiative despite the pandemic's disruptions. The San Francisco company announced the additions to its University Blockchain Research Initiative: ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, Ryerson University in Toronto, and Mexico's Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM).
The moves bring Ripple's UBRI partner network to 37 institutions across 15 countries.
With the University of Zurich, Ripple is backing a joint project to build the world's first interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to digital finance. The Centre for Sustainable Digital Finance will examine "the digitisation of financial services in partnership with multiple stakeholders, including regulators, businesses, financial companies, and consumers," according to Ripple's announcement.
ETH Zurich will focus on a different angle. Ripple is helping the engineering school integrate secure, multi-party computation techniques into blockchain protocols and smart contracts, providing both technical support and research capacity.
At Ryerson University in Toronto, the Cybersecurity Research Lab is developing Mosaïque, a decentralized data-driven system. Ripple's contribution here involves building out a token-based payment rail for the platform, drawing on the company's experience with blockchain infrastructure.
The Mexico partnership addresses a boom in the local blockchain sector. The space has expanded 90 percent over the past two years as traditional firms adopt blockchain solutions to patch gaps in existing systems. Ripple and ITAM are designing courses to train the next wave of engineers and developers for the region. The curriculum will target the growing demand for workers with Fintech and blockchain skills.
