Shapeshift.io and Purse.io announced a partnership that lets altcoin holders spend their digital currency on Amazon at a 10-20% discount.
Shapeshift.io converts between cryptocurrencies. The platform supports 20 digital coins and offers a faster, easier alternative to traditional exchanges. Users swap one coin for another in seconds without creating an account or submitting personal information. The service matches buyers and sellers without using order books.

Purse.io solves a separate problem. It connects Bitcoin buyers wanting to shop Amazon with sellers who own Bitcoin and want dollars. A buyer makes an Amazon purchase with a credit card, paying the seller a premium for Bitcoin. The seller transfers the Bitcoin to the buyer. Both sides avoid the chargeback headaches that plague Bitcoin exchanges when credit cards enter the picture.
The partnership combines these two platforms. Purse.io customers can now buy from Amazon using any of Shapeshift's supported currencies. That creates actual spending options for altcoins including Dogecoin, Litecoin, Ripple, and Potcoin. These coins have lacked a crucial feature: places to spend them.
"We're excited to partner with Shapeshift.io to deliver huge savings on Amazon for not just the bitcoin community, but altcoin community as well," Purse.io co-founder and CEO Andrew Lee said.
The partnership benefits emerging currencies most. Coin developers now treat getting onto Shapeshift.io and establishing a use case through Purse.io as key milestones. Over 3,000 alternate digital currencies exist today, and most will disappear. Only coins that users can buy and spend will survive.
