Goosebumps shaped childhood for kids in the 1990s. R.L. Stine's horror novels—Say Cheese and Die, One Day at Horrorland, Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes, How I Got My Shrunken Head, Vampire Breath—became staples on school bookshelves. A Goosebumps film came out in 2015, backed by Sony Pictures. Sony financed the sequel, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, as well.
For this release, Sony teamed with Greenfence Consumer, a platform building blockchain-based loyalty and rewards systems for mobile devices. The two companies created digital trading cards distributed through Websaver.ca, Canada's largest coupon site. Fans collect cards daily through November 5th, then enter drawings for digital scratcher rewards and additional chances to win.
Some cards come pre-loaded with free movie tickets. Others hold cash. Card trading has shifted. Children once swapped cards in schoolyards, hand to hand. Now they trade on the blockchain.
The Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween GFT Authentic Digital Collectibles demonstrate how crypto collectibles and non-fungible tokens serve marketing purposes, especially among young children spending time online. The GFT brand, created by Greenfence with sister company Greenfence Consumer, provides each collectible with a verified mark. The mark proves the item is authentic and authorized by the IP holder. Scarcity, desirability, and confidence in the origin all give the cards their value.
Jamie Stevens, executive vice president of worldwide consumer products at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said Sony watched Greenfence's work making blockchain accessible to mainstream audiences. "When they approached us about collaborating with Websaver.ca, we were excited to try the platform and reach a large portion of our target audience," Stevens said. "Greenfence Consumer created simple, fun sweepstakes that will engage parents and their children with our movie, which is perfect because Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween is a fun movie."
Fans sign in with a simple process and no outside accounts required. They get a private digital wallet. When they sign in, they see the Magic Book from the film, where they store their collected cards.
Greenfence Consumer stepped away from the hype surrounding initial coin offerings, Bitcoin, and blockchain. The company focused instead on blockchain-powered assets with real value that appeal to mainstream audiences.
"Digital collectibles are a powerful and practical use case for the technology, and speaks to the diverse ways in which blockchain can be leveraged," said Mimi Slavin, head of marketing and business development at Greenfence Consumer.
