Microsoft built the system, which draws from Starbucks' supply chain records spanning more than a decade. Michelle Burns, Senior Vice President at Starbucks, noted the company has tracked every coffee purchase from every farm during that period. Converting that data into something customers could access took effort.
"We go as deep as we can," Burns said about tracing beans to their source. Processing and transport mix coffee from different sources, so some bags can only trace back to a country or region rather than a specific farm.
Farmers also benefit from the system. They can use codes to log into a website and see where their coffee was sold and which blends it became. Farmers wanted this functionality. "What they told us is they didn't know where their coffee went, what blend it went to," Burns said.
The traceability feature only applies to packaged bags sold in Starbucks stores. Single cups purchased at the counter don't have access to this yet. Burns said the company is "just getting started" on expansion.
