Cloud storage solved a genuine problem. The cliché is true: the cloud is just someone else's computer. When encrypted end-to-end, though, that arrangement lets you avoid duplicating files across every device. Better internet speeds over the past decade made this practical.

The threat landscape shifted. Credit card breaches, including Ashley Madison, exposed vulnerabilities in conventional payment methods even when encrypted. Hackers became more sophisticated. Governments in the Five Eyes alliance stepped up surveillance efforts. These concerns echo earlier cryptography battles. The Clipper Chip wars, when the NSA pushed for encryption backdoors, come to mind.

Sync's Bitcoin option removes one attack surface: customers never need to hand over credit card data.

The company encrypts user files end-to-end, meaning Sync cannot access customer data. CEO Thomas Savundra explained: "With Bitcoin, our customers can enjoy absolute privacy in the cloud for both their data and payments."

Sync operates on what it calls "zero-knowledge" encryption. Its privacy page describes the system: "'Zero-knowledge' means we absolutely cannot access the encrypted data stored on our servers. Your data is completely safeguarded from unauthorized access, which is the only way you can completely trust the cloud. Protecting your right to privacy is our passion."

Sync published a privacy white paper detailing its encryption and added two-factor authentication to harden its defenses. The company reports over 100,000 users and earned a favorable Beta review from CloudStorageBuzz.com.
