Premium wine depends on precise conditions at every stage, and tracking this information matters to both producers and consumers. Tencent and Changy, one of China's most prominent winemakers, are developing a blockchain to monitor the journey of each bottle from vineyard to retail.

The system records details starting when producers plant grapes. They log the grape variety and origin, plus specific metrics like moisture content, sun exposure, and temperature ranges. These details flow through fermentation and continue through the packing stage. Consumers examining this production history can understand exactly how their wine was made and confirm its quality. When bottles ship to market, the blockchain records the path through distributors, retailers and individual outlets. Each bottle carries a unique QR code that customers and retailers can scan to verify authenticity and review the complete production record.

Traditional wine traceability suffers from fragmentation. Different supply chain partners—growers, producers, distributors, retailers—maintain separate records. Reconstructing the full story of where a bottle came from and how it was handled requires significant time and effort. A blockchain consolidates all this information into one platform. Authorized users from any point in the chain can view the data without searching across multiple systems.

Blockchain's structure suits this task. The system distributes encrypted information across multiple network nodes, meaning every authorized participant holds a copy. If anyone tries to change existing records, the copies held by other nodes reveal the tampering. This redundancy creates a supply chain that prevents counterfeit products and quality problems from reaching consumers.

Wine represents just one application for supply chain blockchain. Cosco Shipping operates its own blockchain system built on Ant Financial technology, branded as AntChain. It tracks container shipments, licensing paperwork and related documentation across international waters. Walmart and IBM developed a blockchain platform that traces produce, meat, dairy products and condiments. Both systems change how supply chain logistics function by enabling producers and consumers to understand exactly where their products originated.
